Theresa Hill Bio

Theresa Hill has been a voice in the Detroit dance music community in every facet as a party goer, promoter, DJ, emcee and radio host. As a promoter her party series from Project 81 to the DJ BDay Birthday series are legendary. She is a pioneering female Detroit DJ and sought after emcee. But it has been as a radio personality that the groundbreaking Theresa Hill aka T Hill aka Lady T has made her true lasting contribution.

Delivered by world-renowned Dr. Charles H. Wright on May 27, 1963, Theresa Hill was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan where her parents, sisters, aunts, uncles & cousins all had and still have an intense love of music. This contributed to her diverse musical taste in her youth. Listening to everyone from The Whispers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sly & the Family Stone, The Motown Sound to Journey, Elton John, Hall & Oats, The Police, Kraftwerk, The B-52’s, Devo, Gary Newman, Parliament Funkadelic and her favorite artist Prince, as played on the air by her friend and confidant, legendary Detroit radio personality, The Electrifying MoJo, she realized early on that she wanted to be a singer. Not having the courage to sing in front of a large audience, she redirected her passion to radio.

In the fall of 1980, she attended her first dance music party at the fabled Park Avenue Club in Downtown Detroit where she was introduced to a new genre of music called 'Progressive Dance Music’ which is now called "House" music. Fully immersed in the teenage social clubs of Detroit early eighties, most notably Gables and Charivari, she was introduced to the art of DJing by Darryl Harvey of the Ritz Sound company. She learned marketing and promotion from master marketer, Todd Johnson. Surrounded by the best at the time, Theresa became highly skilled on the tables in her own right; her style influenced by the late DJ Duane Montgomery, Darryl Shannon, Kevin Dysard and others. Her marketing and promotional skill set is by far one of the best in this Detroit dance music landscape.

Ultimately her passion for music and the craft led to radio. She attended the prestigious Specs Howard School of Media Arts and graduated with honors and received her FCC license. She also later graduated from Siena Heights University with a Batchelor Degree in Communications. She is currently enrolled in the Apple Developer Academy where she has entered the app developer tech industry. She will graduate in June 2025.

Theresa Hill was born for the radio. She has an insatiable love of music and culture. Her musical IQ is deep and her strong commitment to showcasing and encouraging listeners to support the artists is second to none. In August of 1999, she got her first taste of the airwaves on the Detroit Public Schools 50,000-watt radio station, 90.9FM WDTR with Aaron Alfaro & The Morning Roll Call.

But it was the fall of 2002 and becoming the afternoon drive time host of The After School Groove that put her in the driver’s seat. House and Techno disc jockeys didn't have a platform to display their talents outside of the clubs. The After School Groove's House Party filled that void. Her show featured DJs such as Delano Smith, Juan Atkins, Al Ester, DJ Cent, Terrence Parker, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills aka the Wizard, Eddie Fowlkes, DJ Minx, Norm Talley and more. Invitation to guest star on the show became a sought-after honor in the Detroit party DJ community

The show was an instant hit and the demand for the music was so strong, at her listeners’ urging, in the early 2000’s, Theresa began hosting house music events with featured DJs and live house acts performing such as the late Colonel Abrams, D Train, Dajae and Norma Jean Bell. The weekly Project 81 parties and the DJ B Day Birthday Series followed this. DJ’s miss important events in their personal lives to keep the dance scene entertained. Theresa’s thought was to create an event to celebrate them on their special day. Events were a natural offshoot of her desire to showcase the artists. Detroit DJ’s Delano Smith, Moodymann, Al Ester and Bruce Bailey have been the guest of honor at these events.

Never far from the music, she curated the House on the River programming for the Ribs N’ Soul Festival for 4 years. She has hosted Kevin Saunderson’ Stage at the Movement Festival for 5 years.

Affectionally called ‘Lady T” on the airwaves, she currently co-hosts The Old School House Party with Gerald McBride and Andre Key on Mix 92.3 WMXD Detroit, an iHeart radio station. She has been on the show since 2001. The syndicated show reaches over one million listeners across the country weekly. Theresa's voice has graced the Detroit airwaves consistently for the past twenty-five plus years.

She has emceed concerts and events in Detroit and around the country for Detroit Techno Gift To The World,  Stanley Clark, Maysa, Incognito, Michael Franks, Chaka Khan, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, The Whispers, The Emotions, The Dramatics, Tyrese, Enchantment, Colonel Abrams, D Train, Dajae, Ce Ce Peniston and more.

She is also a voice actor who has voiced commercials for many products including Bounty, Oil of Olay, Secret Deodorant, Gillette Venus, WIC Cards, Charmin Tissue, Pepto Herbal Blends, Swiffer Heavy Duty Dusters, Dawn Platinum Dish Soap, Oral B iO Electric Toothbrush, Pantene Royal Oils, non-profits and concert promotions.

She owns Direct Drive Sound Effects, offering sound, video and promotional services. Her client list includes the American Cancer Society, UAW, Henry Ford Health Systems, Deloitte & Touché, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Hamilton Anderson Associates, Microsoft, The Detroit Science Center, The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, The Links Organization, Siena Heights University and The Detroit Public School System among others.

Theresa is one of the co-creators and host of the annual Charivari Detroit Music Festival. Yes, she stays busy, and all this led her to…
